Guilford County is pretty close to Surry, and was a major Quaker
settlement. The Moravians were just to the west of Guilford, in what is
now Forsyth (part of Stokes until 1849). Beyond that, the next counties
are Surry and Yadkin. Until 1789, Surry, Yadkin, Stokes and Forsyth were
all Surry.

Granville County is east of Guilford, but would be a reasonable transition
point for someone coming westward from Bertie, so this might indeed be the
sequence that ties a Bertie Co. family to Surry.
