According to the U. S. Census Bureau, there are approximately 3,939,907 people (or 1,378,967 adult males) with the Holder surname in the United States, which represents approximately 0.014% of the total population. It is the 857th most common surname.
You can calculate the number for any of the surnames you are researching by getting the % frequency from:
http://www.census.gov/genealogy/www/freqnames.html
The Census Bureau estimated how often surnames occur based on a statistical sampling of the 1990 census. Multiply that percentage by 281,421,906 (the total US population as of April 1, 2000) to get an estimate of the total number of people with that surname. Assuming that 50% are males, divide that number by 2 to get a rough idea of the number of males with the surname. Multiply by .7 if you want to know the number of adult males. So the formula is:
Percentage * 281,421,906 / 2 * .7 = adult males with surname
There are 8,979 Holders in the United Kingdom where Holder ranks as the 859th most common name. The Office of National Statistics of the UK uses a different methodology. Their data is based on 54,412,638 people with 269,353 different surnames and gives an actual count of the number of persons for each surname. Search for the names you are researching by going to:

Does anyone know of similar web sites for Germany and France? We are interested in finding out the frequency of the name in those two countries.
