It seems that you have taken all the right first steps. One other suggestion I might make is to look for an obituary in the local papers where your grandfather died. If he did not die in your area and you cannot travel there, you may be able to request an interlibrary loan either at your local public library or LDS if you can identify a source. Try the USGenWeb site for the county where he died. There may be someone willing to do lookups for free. Obits can often provide useful info that you never expected, including those personal details that help breathe life into our ancestors. Good luck.
