The House family of Maryland and descendants of Matthais Shilts
John House and his wife, Susannah, had at least five children, ca. 1701-
ca. 1732. The family emigrated from Baden, Germany, and may have
settled first in New Jersey. They were living in Frederick County,
Maryland, by 1847. He died there in 1852. Descendants listed
lived in Maryland, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, and elsewhere.
includes an index.

Andrew House, son of John and Susannah, was born about 1701 Balden, Germany,
and probably came to America with his parents about 1747. Wife was
Catherine who is named in the deeds of Frederick county, Md. And Hampshire
County, Virginia. History of Frederick County, Maryland by Williams states
Andrew House was a wealthy nobleman and a great friend of King George III of
England, and was active in helping him during the war, and in return he was
granted a large tract of land on which a part of Baltimore, Rockville and
Frederick were built. When England lost its hold on America Andrew returned
to Germany where he died. After the war the U.S. Government levied a tax on
land for internal improvement and his son John valentine refused to pay the
tax so the land was sold. In 1781 there was deed entry in the name of
Andreas House for 100 acres of land in Fallowfield Township, Washington
county, Penna, and for his son John in 1786, 330 ¾ acres under Virginia
Certificate. Tax lists 1784-85 of Fallowfield Township show Andrew House
and sons John and Adam. He is named in Hampshire County, Virginia records
through 1793, and in 1790 lived Union township, Fayette County, Penna. Since
he was then very elderly it doubtful that he returned to Germany, and more
likely died in Fayette County.
