Designed in 1714, the church is one of the finest examples of the work of
Nicholas Hawksmoor. The money for the building of the church was raised by a
tax on coal. It originally served the Huguenot refugees who had joined a
small group of silkweavers living and working in the green fields of
Spitalfields. They built up a prosperous community and today more than half
of the 18th century gravestones bear French names.
