Hi everyone -- sorry about this understandable flurry of anxiety over the
virus detected by some of you today. I have since scanned my own system for
viruses and everything came up clean.
In any event, be assured that this virus does not seem to be one of the
"nasties" -- it is merely a nuisance. In other words, I don't think it will
do anything horrific to your computer. But, it does apparently instruct
Windows to shut down (which would cause you to lose any files you are
working on at that time and have not saved).
However, please be aware that I am a complete ignoramus where viruses
are concerned so please, to re-assure yourself, do some research on this
virus, as well as others, and their possible effects on your computer.
According to what I have learned this morning, this virus was apparently
first reported in Europe (this ties in with Kay's post which initiated the
virus alert) in late December and it is activated at 5 pm on the first of
each month (which also ties in because Kay sent her post on the 2nd). It
affects Outlook Express but I found no other pgorams mentioned.

For more info about this virus, go to:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/wscript.kakworm.html

I scanned my computer using a free trial offer downloaded online through:
http://www.mcafee.com/ . This is a North American site and I'm not sure if
it would be accessible to our European listers. If anyone has an alternative
to share for those not in North America, please let the list know.

As an alternative, you can also examine your computer yourself, to see if
there are infected files and then delete them, using the instructions below,
sent to me by Marty Graybill.

Marty's instructions are as follows --

First: Look at your Autoexec.bat file with Notepad, C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Look for lines calling up any .HTA files, should be
C:/Windows/Startmenu/Programs/startup/KAK.HTA, delete these lines only by
highlighting them, hit your delete key then save the Autoexec.bat file

Then look for these files,

c:\windows\kak.htm
c:\windows\system\(name).hta
c:\windows\Menu Démarrer\Programmes\Démarrage\kak.hta
c:\windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\kak.hta

Delete the above files after doing a find files from start menu, look also
for any files ending in .HTA, delete these too ! There will probably be a
.hta file in your windows/system folder such as 98278AE0.HTA, delete this
and this c:\windows\kak.htm (this contains the Virus Script itself)

Good luck, everyone! Andrea
