Subject: [HWE] Announcing HWE Message Board

Fellow listers --

This is to let you know that there is now an HWE Message Board (on the
Rootsweb site) which is linked to this list. The HWE Board matches this list
in that it has the same focus, both in subject and in geographical region
(ie. the research of Huguenots and Walloons in continental Europe and/or the
UK and/or Ireland). I requested that Rootsweb set up this Board and I am the
administrator of the Board, as I am of this list.

I want to tell you a few things regarding the Board -- ie., why the HWE
Message Board was created, and how it differs from the list; how the
existence of the Board may affect the list, and lastly, how to get to the
HWE Board and your choices once you get there.

a) Why an HWE Message Board?
Having an HWE Board is merely another way to reach out to
researchers who are interested in Huguenot and/or Walloon ancestors in
Europe. Some people just don't want to join a mailing list, for a variety of
reasons. They would, however, be willing to post a message on the Board and
wait for replies via that route.
The Board requires only that people leave a message on the Board, much
like a message board in real life. That is the extent of their involvement
(although they can choose to have replies, if there are any, sent to them.)
Other than that, they are not involved in other posts on the Board -- that
is, they do not receive any of them, as they would do on a mailing list.
They can, however, keep up-to-date by visiting the Board whenever they
like. Anyone can post a message on a Board anytime -- you do not have
to join as you do with a list.

b) How will the HWE Board affect the HWE list?
The only way that messages on the Board will affect the list is that
messages on the Board will be "gatewayed" (ie. forwarded) to the list and
will appear on the list as posts. You will know they are posts to the Board,
however, because I will be the one forwarding them to the list and, in
addition, there will be the words {not a subscriber} in the subject line.
There will be instructions in the message which will tell you how to reply
to these posts, if you want to.
Anyone on this list is also free to post a message to the Board, with
the understanding that the post will be forwarded to the list, as I
explained above.

Will all Board messages reach the list? Possibly not. I will be
monitoring the Board messages and, under some circumstances,
I may remove them from the Board and also will not pass them on to the list.
I am anticipating that this will happen only when messages *do not* fit our
geographical focus, ie. are *not* mostly about Huguenots/Walloons in
continental Europe and/or the UK and/or Ireland. As the admin of the Board,
I do have the discretion of removing messages in this way (which is not the
case with the list). Board messages will also come to me first and I will
then forward them to the list (or not) as appropriate.

c) How to get to the HWE Board?
You can get to the Board by going to the Rootsweb site at
http://www.rootsweb.com/ and clicking on the following choices -- Message
Boards > Topics > Religions and Religious > Huguenots >
Huguenots-Walloons-Europe.
Or a shorter way to do it would be to go to:
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.religious
then click on Huguenots, then Huguenots-Walloons-Europe.
Once you're on the Board, you can post a new message or reply to a
previous one. You can also choose to be notified when someone replies to a
board message of yours. If you click on Links & Announcements, you will see
info about the Board -- ie. how to contact the admin, what the focus of the
Board is, and also info about the HWE list and website.
So far, there are only two messages on the Board. I put the first one
there myself on 10 Sept when the Board was created (I didn't post this info
to the list at the time, for obvious reasons). The second message was posted
on the Board today and I will be forwarding that one to the list in the next
little while.

And I think that's all I wanted to say. This will be a learning
experience for all of us and I am hoping that it will a positive one for
everyone.

One last thing -- you should be aware that there is also a HUGUENOT and
also a HUGUENOTS Message Board. However, these are *surname*
message boards, for people who are researching those particular surnames.
The HWE Board, on the other hand, is a topic message board.
If you want to have a look at those surname boards, they're at:
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.huguenot and
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.huguenots.

If anyone has questions or comments about the HWE Board, post them to
the list if you think they would be of general interest. Otherwise, please
contact me off-list. Thanks. Andrea (as list concierge)
