Hello list,
Without having read all of the posts re William the Conqueror I would
like to make one comment that is most relevant to this list that concerns
William the Conqueror. There are certain names in England that have some
family members that are French huguenot or walloon descendants AND certain
persons of the same name who are descendants of soldiers or settlers who came
with William the Conqueror. An example is my name ANGER, ANGIER, AINGER,
AUNGIER, D'ANGER, ANSGER, ANGERS ETC. In my research this has led to immense
difficulty in differentiating those who are huguenot or walloon and those who
descend from William. The Ansger spelling I believe was used by early William
settlers. Ainger and Aungier are believed to be huguenot variations in
England. Anger, Angers and Angier examples exist from both groups in England
and these spellings still exist in France. To further complicate matters,
some commentators, believe that the ANGIER spelling may also have arisen, in
some cases, indigenously, in England.
