Ellis Island:
The immigration processing center for New York between 1 August 1855 and 18 April 1890 was at Castle Garden. The records generated during this period were stored at Ellis Island, once that facility opened in 1892.
A fire occurred at Ellis Island on 14 June 1897 and the immigration records from 1855-1890 were destroyed. The ship records apparently survived because they were stored elsewhere and are also available from the National Archives.
