| Hi Everybody,
|
| I am currently researching my mother's family name which is RAIMAN. The
| tradition within the family is that they were originally Huguenots but no
| one has any idea when the family came to England or wherabouts in France
| they came from.
|
| I have traced the family tree back to 1787 in Deptford / Greenwich but can
| get no further. There was a French church / chapel in Greenwich but I
have
| been unable to locate any records.
|
| Does anybody on the list have any suggestions as to where I may go next?
|
| Do you think RAIMAN is Huguenot?
The possibility of the name being Huguenot has been well explained by Andrea
but would confirm that the Huguenots were very active in Greenwich. Suggest
you look at the Proceedings of the Huguenot Society of Great Britain Vol
XXVII No 2 1999 which contains a very long article on the subject written by
Randolph Vigne. This explains the situation very well and list many names
of people active in the area. It is likely they used St Alfeges Church but
would suggest you read the article first - this should be available at most
public libraries.
