Subject: [HWE] Incorrect Garrigues Lineage
Date: Sat, 02 Mar 2002 02:10:52

To those interested,

The following is a common and erroneous lineage of Matthieu Garrigues of
Languedoc, France. He was the first of the surname known to have immigrated
to Philadelphia between 1713-1714 with his wife Susanne Rochet.

The lineage contains more errors than I can correct in one message so if
anyone recognizes the information below and is interested in the corrections
please contact me. Also, check out my website at:

http://www.geocities.com/rcgarrigus

This contains many reports and images and transcriptions of documention.

Take care and happy hunting!

Bob Garrigus

==================================
The incorrect lineage follows:

(1) 1. Jean DE LA GARRIGUES - 4251

Birth Date: 1510
Birth Place: Abt.in France

Research:
Many people came through second countries such as
England,Germany,Switzerland,and so on.Often
Huguenots escaped or had to be smuggled out of France and if caught
weree fined,put into prison,to the
galley ships as slaves,or even to their death.Their children would be
taken and put into convents or other
"Catholic"Institutions to be saved. As for the French Port they left
from, well they might be hidden or put into
giant wine kegs in Boudreaux and then shipped to Dublin or somewhere.

Spouse: Ann DE MIRAMOUNT - 4252
Birth Date: 1510
Birth Place: In France

Marriage Date: 1530

Chart-F- La Garrigues,Le Garrigue-compiled by Antony Benezet in 1775 and
by letters of patent of Louis
XIII and other original pieces which have been communicated to us.

2- The name Garrigues appears among those of Noble Rank in De Maigney's
Science of Heraldry and is
of provencial derivation and meaning, and is very ancient;so ancient that
an old provencial word,now
incorporated into French,is drawn from the estate once held by people of
that name.Part of the Cevenes
Mountains are called Mount Garrigues, and part of the province of
Valencia is called La Garrigue.

As of the old French Families, the family seat of the branch spelling the
name De La Garrigue was at
Saint-Onge,and of the De La Garrigues in the Mindi.

At the time of the Revocation the Calvanist Branches of the family
scattered;one branch to England,two to
Holland, three to Germany, and the American Branch to the French West
Indies and thence to America.

3-*Count Arnard Henri De La Garrigue* went to the Islands,he returned
afterwards to settle in Paris-from
genealogical history of the family of La Garrigue, procurred from the
records of France by Antony Benezet
,in 1775.* See also Genealogical Chart C.

4- @Claude D. DuMaigney was one of the leading authorities on
Heraldry.He established the Heraldry
College ,at Paris in 1841.His work on the French Nobility , "Science Des
Armoiries",published in Paris in
1856 is a grand work, and the descriptions and engravings of the arms of
the families treated of are very
fine.

In the old dialect of Province, the word "Garric" meant, according to
Littre's Dictionary of the French
Language,an oak,and "Gariga" is used to name certain species of Rock
Oak,or Red Oak thickets which
cover highland and heath in the Southern part of France.
In Godfray's Dictionary of the Ancient French Language.is stated when
mentioning The Heaths called
"Garrigues".That mountains named Garrigues,Monte Garrigues (Century
Atlas) were at one time covered
by thickets of Ebergreen Oaks or Red Oaks. "Garrigue" means in other
words,an Oak thicket.Hence,the
Oaks in the Garrigues Coat of Arms.
