Hi --
Many thanks to Penny <> for her
post yesterday (1 Jly) about being able to search the IGI with
batch numbers *and* using just first names!
This was new news to me, Penny, and possibly to many others.
It might be really useful if you don't even have a surname or if you're
just not sure of all the surname spellings.
But when using first names, keep in mind that these are
records written in French. Therefore, some first names are
possibly (probably?) spelled differently.
For example --
Mary may be Mary but also Marie or Marye
Elizabeth is usually the same except when it's Elisabeth
Esther may be Hester or even Ester
Jane may be Jenne or Jeanne
John is probably Jean
William is likely Guillaume
Peter may appear as Pierre....and so on.
I also wanted to mention, as I have before, that *all the details* will
not be included in an IGI entry. For one thing, there are no
deaths/burials from the French churches on the IGI. And a baptism,
for example, contains only the location, date, and names of the infant
& the parents. A marriage contains only the date, location, and
names of the bride & groom. But if you look at the same entries in
the original records, they usually contain a wealth of further
information, eg. an actual birthdate, names of godparents,
witnesses, friends, cousins, in-laws, parents of the bride/groom,
age of the bride/groom and possibly previous spouses, if any,
etc. Sometimes a place of origin is also mentioned.
So please do check the original records if you find anything
interesting. The records for French churches in England which
are on the IGI are taken from the transcriptions published by
the Huguenot Society of London in their Quarto series. For
information on how to obtain access to these original records,
go to our website page about the Quarto series at:
http://www.island.net/~andreav/quarto.htm.
Thanks again, Penny, for posting that info. Anyone else got a little
nugget of useful info which might be interesting and useful for other
subscribers to know? Andrea
