Hello, list --
This post is about batch numbers for churches in Canterbury,
Kent, ENG and it's a follow-up to a post on 10 May which was
about batch numbers for London churches (including French
Protestant ones). The subject line of that May post was --
Batch Numbers: French Churches, London, ENG. You can
find it in the May archives at:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/HUGUENOTS-WALLOONS-EUROPE/2002-05.
And if anyone needs instructions on how to use batch numbers,
they can be found in another message also sent on 10 May with the
subject line -- Finding Huguenots via batch numbers (IGI). It can also
be found in the May archives, as above. Also, Penny's post
earlier this month (1 July) about searching with first names only --
as opposed to surnames -- is a useful one (subject line: Batch
numbers searching).
Here's the Canterbury info.
The batch numbers for the Walloon or Strangers' Church
in Canterbury are C049021 (for christenings) & M049021
(for marriages).
For the Malt House Chapel -- which was French Huguenot --
there is batch number C049011 (christenings only).
Since many Huguenots also attended nearby Church of
England (parish) churches in Canterbury, you might want to
check those as well, beginning with St. Alphege which was
attended by the French refugees.
* St Alphege -- batch numbers are P015201, also C015201
to C015203 (for christenings) and M015201 to M015203 (for marriages).
* St Dunstan -- batch numbers E015151, also C015151
(christenings) and M015151 (marriages).
* St George the Martyr -- batch numbers are P015161, also
C015161 (christenings) and M015161 (marriages).
* St Mary Bredin -- batch numbers are C036531 (christenings)
and M036531 (marriages)
* St Mary Magdalene -- batch numbers are C008321
(christenings) and M008321 (marriages).
* St Paul -- batch numbers P016541, also C016541
(christenings) & M016541 (marriages).
* St Peter -- batch numbers C020591 (christenings) and
M020591 (marriages)
* Christchurch (Canterbury Cathedral) -- batch numbers P020651,
also M020651 (marriages) & C020651 (christenings)
Please note that the above list includes only about half of the
parish churches which once existed in Canterbury (sixteen in all).
Since there appear to be no batch numbers for the remainder
of these parish churches -- which are All Saints, Holy Cross
Westgate, St. Andrew, St. Margaret, St. Martin, St. Mary Bredman,
St. Mary Northgate, St. Margaret, and St. Mildred -- they appear
*not* to have been entered onto the IGI at all.
You might also want to try the following Canterbury churches
which were of denominations other than Church of England --
* Guildhall Street Independent & Presbyterian -- batch numbers
are C068061 (christenings) and M068061 (marriages)
* St Peters Street: Wesleyan -- batch numbers are
C068071 (christenings) and M068071 (marriages)
* Blackfriars: General Baptist -- batch numbers are
C091561 (christenings) and M091561 (marriages)
* Lady Huntingdon's Union Chapel, Watling St. -- batch numbers
are C068081 (christenings) and M068081 (for marriages)
While on the subject of Canterbury, the online Index of Canterbury
Baptisms 1790-1840 may also come in handy, although it can only
be accessed for a fee. It's at http://www.kentgen.com/canterbury.htm and it
includes all 16 Canterbury parishes.
And finally, batch numbers of all churches in Kent, are at:
http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~cjh/woodhurst/kigi.html or at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tyeroots/index4.html.
The second URL in particular (IGI Batch Numbers) has lots of links
and explanation about this topic. Look for list of all English counties
on left hand side of page.
Hope this is useful for those of you researching ancestors
in Canterbury or in other Kent locations. Andrea
