I do know that in Dublin for example there were 'French' churches attended
by our Huguenot ancestors. Some 'conformed' to the rites of the Anglican
Church and used the Anglican prayerbook in the French language, while others
maintained their non-conformity and worshipped in their traditional way in
their own chapels. Eventually, a generation on, they 'conformed'.
When I attended confirmation classes (Anglican in NZ) the vicar who was an
Irishman told us that there were Anglicans and Protestants. He saw us as
part of the 'catholic' as in 'universal' church, but certainly different to
the 'other' Protestant churches.
As for Henry VIII - my understanding of history is that England never really
sat comfortably with the Pope and the Christian Church as it was then
considered themselves to be an English church. Remember that England was
never particularly friendly with other 'Catholic' countries like Spain and
France.
