Sometimes we seem to assist our fellow subscribers
without being aware. If something has been said that
assists others, then that is but one purpose of being a
subscriber to any list.
Glad to have been of some assistance, is meant to my
mailing list friend Barbara Holt.
Being a Huguenot does not require that our ancestors
were "paid up" members of some society. After all, we
can be Christian without going to church, without
donating to the greater financial glory of some priest
or pastor.
By golly one can even be a Christian without ever
having set foot inside a church.
Hmm ok so fire and damnation for me.
I suggest that our Huguenot ancestors need not
necessarily ever be found on any "list" or in the
records of any parish.
To me, the only real requirement would to have heard
the words of Calvin, if one is to be a true French
Huguenot. Or perhaps that can be extended to reading
Zwangli or Luther which would mean that your ancestor
had Walloon sentiments.
If our ancestors "heard" and then "believed" the words
spoken or written by these particular reformers then
they can be considered Huguenot or Walloon.
Sure does help with our modern requirements in the
genealogical studies if we can actually document our
Huguenot ancestor, but it is not logical to assume that
if there is no documentation then there was no Huguenot.
Good grief!
The Calvinists are going to get me for this or some
obscure Huguenot society. But I believe that it has to
be said. Some can find comfort in their belief without
wearing a badge or be public about being whatever.
By way of example.
A young couple arrived on my doorstep.
"Praise the lord have you read the bible?".. "Nope, not
since a youngster"... "Oh! when did you lose your
faith?".. "Didn't"... "Hmmm you must have ?".."Nope, I
talk with God on a daily basis, don't you ?"
I couldn't understand why they muttered and left in
such a hurry.
I would like to say I was a Huguenot. But I am not.
Some of my ancestors were. Done deal.
Thinking is good for the soul.
Kind Regards,
Peter Leroy
