I may not be understanding your point, Shane....and apologies if I am....
But my understanding is that "Nonconformist" was typically a term applied to
'home-grown' Protestant movements within the UK, which were "non-conforming"
to the 39 Articles and CofE doctrine (many of them left the CofE, often as
adults). I don't think (but I could be way wrong) that Dutch Reformed Church
or French Protestant Church members would have been classified as
"Nonconformist" (with a capital N, anyway)-- that term was applied to a
Anabaptists, Plymouth Brethren, the so-called Muscular Xians, etc. ...a
common Protestant heritage, true, but not pan-European for the most part....

Subject: [HWE] Nonconformist Registers, Dr William's Library
Folks,
Has anyone ever looked into the Nonconformist Registers of Dr William's
Library? This appears to be a document containing the names of London
Nonconformists. It is interesting that some of the people in this register
are also shown in seperate documents as Christened in the Church of England.
I guess this is evidence that these peoples need to fit in. But why would
they still be listed as Nonconfomist? Was this just a front to make them
seem less like "strangers"? And why did this doctor feel the need to list
them in the first place?
Shane
