SM: Hi Marc, Thanks for the reply. I thought I was doing very well to have
narrowed it down to Picardie ;o).

MD: I would put no stock in the "Picardy" part of the description (in part
because we'd have to know precisely where a fluid boundary was drawn at that
time, and in part because we have a specific place name, which is usually
more accurate than other attributions... like saying that Vancouver, BC is
in "the Oregon Territory" -- at one time, that would have been true, but the
territory's boundaries are significantly different now...yet Vancouver is
right where it's always been). I note a Menilles about 75K northwest of
Plessis Mornay on modern maps -- in the direction of Picardy, anyway...

SM: The period I am looking for, if she married in 1700 in Canterbury, would
be about the 1680's +/- 5 years. I can't find anything that resembles "Du
Menille en Picardie" or any of it's variants. My husband and I have tried
saying it in French with an English accent and in English with a French
accent, but we haven't got anywhere - we just end up talking rubbish to each
other.

MD: Rigobert Bonne's famous 1785 map of Picardy shows no town of that name
-- which is not conclusive, just interesting... I will go have a look at the
maps I don't have in electronic form, to see if anything crops up on
those...

The Map House in London has a copy of Covens & Mortier's 1730 map of Picardy
-- if you're feeling rich ;-> They are great folks, and will do leg work for
you and let you have JPGs before you buy... (no, not affiliated with them
;->)

(If you want a copy of the map in SID format, drop me a note and I'll
arrange to get it to you)
