I don't know much about the Huguenot surnames. I understand that one was
lucky if one had one for a start. I think that only those with titles had
them. That would have been lucky wouldn't it? But that still limits the
people with surnames I suppose. I don't know that an edict making all
surnames official is going to make any difference to the hoi polloi because
they never had one to start with did they? Or did it actually mean that one
had to adopt a surname and from thereon officially exist. I'm fast getting
the feeling that I may as well give up presuming that the CUPPLES' existed
officially or otherwise.
