Hello, I am a direct descendant of Pierre Chamois as well (He is my 8th great-grandfather.)

He lived in Massachusetts where his name was Peter Shumway (which you probably already knew).

Pierre Chamois (aka Peter Shumway) married Frances R. GOULD. They lived mostly in Essex County, Massachusetts. He died 10 Jun 1695 in Boxford, Essex, Massachusetts. Frances, the daughter of Zaccheus GOULD and Phebe DEACON, died 02 Aug 1714 in Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts.

Pierre and Frances had at least five children. The names of the children that I have are Peter (b. 06 Jun 1678); John (b. abt 1680); Samuel (b. 02 Nov 1681; d. 02 Oct 1715); Dorcas SHUMWAY (b. 10 Oct 1683); and Joseph (b. 13 Oct 1686).

The senior Pierre was a veteran of the King Philips War in Rhode Island in 1675. His military service enabled his son, Peter, to petition the Governor of Massachusetts for a grant of land in 1749.

The surname Shumway has been spelled as "Chomway" while his will was signed "his marke Peeter X Showmway". He probably could not write (or at least not anymore) when he signed the will.

You will find out more about Peter Shumway at www.lds.org or www.ancestry.com. It's been a while since I checked out the information on the New England Historic Genealogical Society (a subscription site).

When the FHCs have access to Connecticut's Godfrey Library online, it would be a good step to check out their resources on the Chamois and Shumway names. I understand that a working relationship between the LDS Church and the Godfrey Library has been agreed upon and now the details are being worked out.

There is a book which has a section on the immigrant Pierre Chamois (aka Peter Shumway). It is entitled "The Charles Shumway Family: 1806-1979" and was printed in 1979. The author is Margaret Shumway Sevey. The book is available from the LDS Library (or a Family History Center) as FHL Film 1033928 Item 10.

Another book containing a biographical sketch of Peter SHUMWAY and his family was written by Mary DeWitt Freeland and is entitled: "The Records of Oxford including Chapters of Nipmuck, Huguenot, and English History accompanied with Biographical Sketches and Notes, 1630-1890 with Manners and Fashions of the Time." It was originally printed in 1894. It is also available through the Family History Library or a FHC. The microfilm is FHL Film 1321003 Item 5.

There are dozens of sources for this surname through the the Family History Library. There were also some websites on the Shumway families from Massachusetts but the links in my favorites list are no longer current. (Sorry!)

I will be very interested in your findings on Pierre Chamois. He has been one of the most interesting of ancestors as there seems to be a lot of information about him in the USA at least.

Good Luck! We'll be waiting to hear your results.

P.S. If you want to contact me off the Huguenot list, that's okay too.

We are searching for the name Pierre Chamois, a hugenot from France who came to America between 1635 and 1677. We think we have located his father, Jacob II de Chamois, earl of l'Eperon in St. Maixent-lEcole, Deaux Sevres, France. We need more verification and more names, if possible and know not where to look.

Does anyone out there recognize the names and or places. Where can we search (in the US if possible) for information.
Thanks,
Lara
