Carla,

Try looking at a US census for your grandfather at a time when he had not yet left home. This should give you his parents, where they were all born etc. It might also give you some of his siblings.
Next try any military service records, including medals he may have won. Don't forget there may be records of motgages or land that he owned. Finally don't forget wills, both his and his parents.
