I have read some posts from this list that have been very informative. I am
hoping someone can help me.
My ggrandparents, Michael Princz/Sprentz and Mary Helen Szedlovich/Setlowitz
came from Hungary. I am not sure of the date, but I have found them in Dayton
Ohio on the city directory along with what could be a brother, or some kind of
relation. This is what I found.
1909-10 Dayton Street Directory:
Sprenc, Mike, laborer, home: 1451 W. Dakota w of Summitt (Mary)
Sprencz, Joseph, laborer, home: 1479 W. Dakota w of Summitt (Julia)
1907-08
Sprinc, Mike, molder, home: 1451 W. Dakota w of Summitt (Mary)
Prince, Jos., ironworker, 1479 W. Dakota w of Summitt (Julia)
1905-06
Princz, Jos., clipper, home: 1463 W. Dakota (Julia)
Princz, Jos., lab. bds., 1440 W. Dakota
Princz, Michael, lab. bds. 166 N. Notre Dame Av (not sure if this is
my Michael)
I also have the information from my grandfather's (John Sprentz, Sr) birth
record confirming this address for the year 1907. On the birth record it list
Hungary as place of birth for Michael and Mary.
So here are my questions---
1. Do I need to know the exact date Michael applied for Naturalization to get
records? And was there a time period immigrants had to be naturalized by? How
do I go about finding the year of naturalization?
2. I have not yet found a death certificate for Michael or Mary. I believe that
they moved to Michigan sometime around 1925 (could be totally wrong on this) My
grandfather John Sprentz Sr. married my grandmother Julianna Szegfu in 1926 in
Michigan. I am told this marriage was an arranged marriage. (My thoughts on
this are that if this was an arranged marriage, I would think the parents of
the wedded, would have known each other and for this they would need to be in
the same state, living closeby.--but again- I could be totally wrong here) I am
almost positive these two families did not know each other in Hungary, and I
am not sure how arranged marriages work, when they are decided, how to pick and
choose etc.
I don't know the year they immigrated or what port they came to, so I can't
order ship passenger lists.
I am in the process of searching cemetaries in where I think they may have
died, to get a death date, so I can then get a death certificate, which may
tell me more.
Are there any suggestions that you might give me in order to find out more on
Michael and Mary?
I am hitting a dead end here with these people. I never knew either of my
grandparents, nor my father, so there is no one to ask. I would appreciate
any suggestions that you might be able to offer.
Thank you
Anne Kenworthy
Other names I am researching are:
Szegfu, Kovac, Nochta, Junga, Nagy, Szarka, Princz/Sprentz,
Szedlovich/Setlowitz
