Subject: [HUNGARY-L] Surname Variation Question
Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 22:03:40 -0700
Hello, fellow researchers in Hungary. I have been going through parish
registers attempting to locate my ancestors. My great grandfather's
death certificate gives his name as CHOMORO, and his wife's death
certicate spells her name CHOMOR. I have also discovered the variations
of CSEMER and SZOMORO in the parish records and am wondering if these
are all the same surname. My mother's family spelled their name Chomor,
but I understand that in Hungarian the Cs makes the Ch sound in English
and the recorder on Ellis Island would have spelled it Chomor instead of
Csomor. I suspect that all of these surname variations are the same
family name, but would someone knowledgeable in Hungarian please confirm
it for me?
Also, one further question, if you would indulge me? Does anyone know
if Aszod Catholic parish registers are to be found anywhere? The
Mormons have filmed the registers from 1874-1895 for the Catholics, but
have filmed the Evangelical registers from the early 1800's. I am
wondering how I can find the Catholic registers from before 1874.
Thank you very much for listening to my questions.
Sincerely, Mary Rollis
