Subject: [HUNGARY-L] I need help!
Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 20:39:32 -0500
I grew up with the knowledge that my mother was Hungarian. She was born,
she said, in Mor, Hungary (1911)......which I believe she said was near
Budapest. My grandfather preceded the family to the U.S. by a few months,
then my grandmother followed with two little girls, in 1914.
It was not until very recently that I was ready to inspect the papers my
mother had stored away. I have what I believe to be her Baptismal
(Christening?) Certificate, her parent's marriage certificate (these items
are in another language....Hungarian?) and her father's Certificate of
Naturalization. Because my mother and her sister were still minors, they
also were naturalized along with my grandfather. This is dated July 12,
1928. The surprise is that it says that, "......who previous to his
naturalization was a subject of CZECHOSLOVAKIA"!!
Does anyone know of Mor, and whether it was at one time a part of
Czechoslovakia? There's very little on these papers that I'm able to read
without knowing Hungarian, but in the lower left-hand corner of the marriage
certificate it says: Rsz. 1004.--11125.Stadium R.-T., Budapest. I know I
should find someone who can read the Hungarian, but I'm reluctant to let
these out of my hands.
The family lived in Vaux Hall, Union County, NJ: Lajos VARGA, b. 14 May
1880, d. 1956, m. 29 Feb 1908 Maria VIEHMANN, b. 1 Sep 1883, d. 1957. His
parents......looks like: Ferenc VARGA, Katalin NAGY; her parents....looks
like: Austak VIEHMANN, Anna BRUMBAUER.
I'd appreciate any help! Thanks.
