Diane,

My Hungarian great-grandfather, Gustav Kriston, arrived in America in 1891,
and by 1900 he was in Johnstown, PA where he lived the rest of his life.

Johnstown is a rather small town; it's very hilly and I believe there is a
great deal of coal mining in the area. There are steel mills, too, I think.

My ggrandfather ran a steamship agency there, selling tickets to and from
Europe. He spoke no English, according to my father. He lived in an area
of Johnstown referred to as Moxham. It was, in the first half of this
century, mainly Hungarian and Czech. We visited Johnstown last summer and
found that area to be very old, with many signs still written in (gosh, I
might be wrong...) Czech, I think.

I don't know if this helps, and I know very little about Johnstown. Perhaps
someone else can shed a little more light on the subject. You might try
your question on the Cambria County list, too. The folks there are very
knowledgeable about Johnstown.

Good luck!

Kathy
