I have written to the parish priests of six villages in Hungary and Slovakia. I received responses and pictures back from five of them, even the one who had retired and moved from the village.

I did send the Internation Postal coupons and also sent my letter in English. I wrote in very simple sentences and did not try to get them to understand my entire family tree.

While only one of them actually led to a connection with any members of my family, it was still fascinating to get responses back and see how earnestly those folks want to help if you ask. Now I admit that I have a rampant imagination, but it felt like they were pleased not to have been forgotten. Apparently one lady went around a village and gathered all sorts of little tidbits about the family I had there. Of course, the village is very small...only about 120 people, but it was wonderful to hear that someone knew or remembered my great grandmother!

I learned alot about those villages from some of the letters and one priest's son took pictures of the gravestones that had any of my names on them.

I think you should take the chance and write! I hesitated too because of a situation in WWII when my mom was unable to sponsor a cousin to come over because of the politics of the husband. She agonized over that decision the rest of her life and I was worried that any family members left would have felt badly toward my mom. That was not the case and I would have missed out on some wonderful correspondence, information and pictures had I not written.

I know this has been discussed before, but I CAN'T (!!!) even figure out how
to search the archives. . . .

I want to send a letter to possible relatives in the small village my
ggrandfather came from in 1902. I look at Suzanne's info on how to address mail,
but I am wondering about other information that may have been shared before,
such as a sample letter in Hungarian, whether it's better to enclose those Euro
Postage stamps, or try to get Hungarian stamps (and where??), if writing to the
parish priest is advisable/productive. Could someone who has done this give
me some advice? I've been putting this off for years thinking it would be
too difficult, but now I'm ready to attack this one head on.

Thanks,
Denise Alvarado
