Just want to share my experience re writing to Hungary. Through this list
and my interest in genealogy I found the place where my grandparents were
from (Baja), and with the help of a kind person who spoke Hungarian wrote
a letter to the newspaper there telling them I was visiting on a certain
date and staying in a certain hotel and was looking for descendants of my
grandparents who left for America in 1907. I heard nothing but imagine my
surprise when I checked in at the Hotel there were messages waiting for me,
and the whole family turned up later that day, that was in Aug 2001. I found
a beautiful family who had the same photos I did and who welcomed me as one
of them . I felt at
home and feel as though I have found my place. I recently returned there Aug
2003 for a family reunion ( large family) and find it absolutely so
wonderful to feel so at home,to see my grandparents town and walk where they
walked etc., is just marvellous. I never knew them at all as they died in
the US and I was brought up in Australia. I look like different family
members and have been told I have many family traits. As an 'only' this
makes me feel really like I am one of the family. I feel so blessed that I
started my search and with the help of a volunteer in NJ named Evelyn found
the necessary info to get me going ( 1920 US Census) I am learning more
and more about HU and feel very proud to have Magyar blood running thro my
veins. When I left it was so sad, they 'sang' to me as I walked away, they
have beautiful voices to match their beautiful souls. I hope to visit again
to learn more about my heritage.
