I know we have historians on this list and certainly most of our members are
more knowledgeable than I on the subject of Hungary.
My great grandfather as well as his children "belonged" to Prince Esterhazy
and/or one of his Lords during the 1800's.
I contend this type of "employment" led to a lot of moving from village to
village.
Just last night, I re read an old letter telling of the conditions they
lived under. "They had one room and a communal kitchen". This of course
tells me that the small house that still stands but in bits and pieces was
shared by other families.
I was told by the Arhives in Hungary, when they still did research for a
nominal fee, that my grandfather was born to agricultural workers.
To my way of thinking that is a euphenism for serfs.
Am I way off the mark?
Anyone?
