Hello Hugo listers---please excuse any multiple postings.I think my
'puter
was celebrating Y 2 K early!

THE FIRST THANKSGIVING (Part 3 of 3)

If you visit Jacksonville, you may explore the National Park Service's,
nearly full-size, replica of the fort, where the Fieur- de -lis flag
flies; sight down the barrel of a large brass cannon, and browse the
interesting museum on the site.

As you walk
the trails you'll also see what may well be the great-g-g-g-g
grandchildren of those grapes along your path. The nearly 7 feet tall
Timucnan Indians are all, sad to say, gone, but the large replica of the
obelisk, that Ribault, leader of the expedition caused to have erected
to mark and claim the land, still stands tall.

If you can't come in person, you may want to visit these WebSites:

THANKSGIVING TIME LINE

1562 ~ May 1st Ribault, & de Laudonniere "prostrated themselves
and gave thanks to God for their safe arrival."Alamacani, Mayport,
Jacksonville, Florida
History of Jacksonville, Florida, Davis

1564,June 30th Laudonniere Ft. Caroline, Jacksonville,
"after the Huguenots had constructed earth and log huts and dug a well,
they sang a hymn of thanksgiving and prayed for their future in their
new home." No Indians, no turkey ---but being French they soon made
wine.

Sept. 8th~ St. Augustine Don Pedro Menendez de Avlles landed
at what is
now Mission Nombre de Dios and immediately held a
Mass of Thanksgiving. You can attend, as I have, the yearly reenactment
of Menendez's landing and attend the Mass---held on the probable exact
spot. Menendez invited the local Seloy Indians to dinner. Menu: Cocido,
a stew of salt pork, garbanzo beans with garlic, and hard sea biscuits
and red wine. Again, no turkey, and, alas, no mention of paella nor
fian.

Be Blessed!

Don
