hi dena...i have bodines in my ancestry, tracing back to one william bodine,
b. 1803 in pennsylvania. have not been able to get further back than that. i
do know that there were a fair number of bodine families in pennsylvania
around the time william was born; just not which one is his!
he married my ggg gm mary egle in livingston co. NY and they later moved to
genesee co. MI. i just recently found a descendant of my branch of bodines
who lives out in washington state; she filled me in on her line but she's
been as puzzled trying to track william as i am, and in fact yet another
bodine researcher, dave bodine, has william on his website as one of the
'ten most wanted'! dave's email and website:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bodine/
do you know if the bodines are really recognized as Huguenot by the Hug.
Society? i've read about the supposed bodine origins but you never know how
much of that stuff is wishful thinking, there's rarely any citations to
sources of info to back it up.
i have some bodines i wasn't able to tie into my line from census
records...in New Jersey (right next door to Staten Island) in 1800 and
earlier (Abraham, Cornelius, Vincent, Nicholas, James) and in Ulster Co. NY
(Louis, Peter, William--1790). i also have Lewis, Peter, Vincent (on Staten
Island, under borough of Richmond), Jacob, John (also S.I.), Benjamin and
David in 1800. Vincent and John Jr. were still on Staten Island in 1810.
other info: i have a William Oakly Bodine born to William Bodine and Rosanna
Mattes on March 28, 1828 on Staten Island, New Dorp Moravian Church...i
believe that's from the IGI, may be a christening rather than a birth. i
also have a marriage record for Vincent Bodine, b. 1787 Staten Island,
married Sarah Ann Martling in 1812...their children were William Henry,
Jacob, Maria Jane, Mary Elizabeth and Caroline. Vincent d. 1862 in Union Co.
NJ (not sure if that's from IGI or not...sometimes i wasn't good myself at
noting sources!)
