I, too, was intrigued by the French research connections, especially in connection with the DUBOIS surname.

My primary hesitation about plunging in with French research as early as 1400-1500 is that I am still trying to research my JOHN DUBOIS' migration to the Charleston, SC area prior to 1696.

Because I have found no records pertaining to any DUBOIS in Carolina prior to JOHN DUBOIS' payment of quitrents in 1696, I am working under the theory that he migrated there sometime prior, and that he was the first of the surname to establish residence in the area. (There was a Huguenot explorer named JEAN DUBOIS who sailed with Coligny in the area several generations earlier, but he did not settle there.)

From whence cometh JOHN DUBOIS?

Between 1500 and 1700, the name DUBOIS can be found in England, Ireland, Barbados and other islands, New York, Holland, and many other areas outside of France.

I am thinking that because JOHN DUBOIS' name does not appear among naturalized citizen's lists, and because his given name, and those of his wife and children are all consitently anglicized that he was at least second generation English.

I would be very interested in records that point to DUBOIS migrations out of France to any other area prior to 1700.

So, Mike, Ray and anyone else--do you have suggestions?

The Huguenot-Walloon-Europe list, thanks to Andrea Vogel especially, has explored many English records, and I find many references to the name DUBOIS in England for many generations prior to 1700 especially in Canterbury.

As an example Elizabeth is researching DuBois. I do have information regarding a Josselin du Bois and the chateau de Chabenet in the 15th century. Would this be of interest? There are also 159 references to the name at the Bibliotheque Genealogique in Paris who will carry out a search if requested.
