Hi folks
I've had a few enquiries about the records that are available at the Archives Departementales of Seine-Maritime, which are situated in the offices of the Consiel General in Rouen.
There are two sets of records, the first are the original records, which are highly restricted and the second are the films of the records, made by the LDS in 1986 or thereabouts, which cover the Protestante churches. In all there are 31 churches covered with dates ranging from the late 1500s to the early 1800s, so periods of Protestante/Huguenot times and more settled times. Don't be fooled by the 31 churches, some of them, for example Lintot (Assemblee) cover additional records for Bolbec, Gruchet, Lillebonne, Le Mesnil, Beuzevillette, Le Mont 'et autres paroisses'.
The films reflect the content of the records as described in the catalogue (I got it photocopied) and they are a real muddle. Apart from the conditions of the readers and the room, the films are mainly of poor quality and really take some reading.
Whilst Rouen per se has the largest records from the Elise Recueillie a Quevilly, they are very muddled and are confused by the secular records for Rouen in the Baillage puis Tribunal de District which covers the Revolutionary period though only for 4 years, leaving a gap of about a century.
The other thing to point out here is that the records are far from complete. In the midst of the records you can see the patterns of what exists and what does not but these churches were very strong with very large and distinct congregations and the chances of finding people back in the Catholic records would be slight, though there are some records of abjurations so some of the 'defaulters' could be picked up in this manner.
Over the next few weeks I'll post the actual dates and types of records available so people will get an idea of what is available. I also have details of the records available at Amiens and if I can find time, I'll post that stuff also. I'll also post some of the other information that I have picked up.
The Dieppe/Rouen/Haut Normandie area will be the Centre of the Huguenot Reunion later this year which should be interesting.
Regards
Tony
