Hi Del!
I believe you will have a combination of EMG and nerve conduction study
done. These seem to go hand in hand and help the doctor to rule out any
permanent damage being done. Also it helps to tell what type of nerve
problems you are having and if further tests are needed to look for possible
connective tissue damage. I had these tests done when I had pains in my
fingers and toes.
A very fine needle is inserted into the muscle and there really is very
little pain if any. Then an electrical shock is applied and it makes the
muscle jump. The shock is like hitting your funny bone, it makes you jump
and tingle so you do have some pain. I can tell you, though, that as quick
as it happened the pain disappears. It seems the doctor works on one major
muscle at a time so you will be on the table for a while. These tests
really are necessary to help the doctors understand what is going on with
your muscles.
Hope this eases your worries about the test and that things work out OK for
you.
Sharon
