The Heroic Iowa 24th.-- In another place we present the mournful record of
the killed and the wounded of the 24th Iowa, in the battle of Champion Hill
fought on the 16th of May during the advance of Gen. Grant's army upon
Vicksburg. A glance at the figures will show one that the loss of the Regiment was
about 33 per cent, and when we remember that a loss of from 15 to 20 per cent is
considered as heavy as an army can endure in battle, we at once see that the
24th must have been in the "very thick of the fight" and that they fought as
only heroic and liberty loving men can fight.
Three Companies of this regiment were raised in this County: Co. G. in
this place,--Co. H. in the neighborhood of Springville, if we recollect aright,
and another Company whose letter has escaped our recollection in and about
Mount Vernon [Co. F]. The Regiment when raised was known as the Temperance
Regiment, and was made up of the best men to be found, and placed under the command
of Col. Byam of Mt. Vernon. It has fought nobly and suffered fearfully, and
its name will ever [be] mentioned with those other Iowa Regiments whose gallant
deeds have caused their fame to be spread over the whole Union.
