I shared this brief item with a few listers and thought I'd share it with
others. We thought it said a lot about the way some of the Eastern newspapers
viewed the wartime events out west.
The Cedar Valley Times
Cedar Rapids, Linn Co., Iowa
May 28, 1863
>From Saturday's Mail.
There is no news to-day, with the exception of what we get from the
Mississippi. A great battle has been fought by Gen. Grant in the neighborhood of
Jackson, against the rebels under the command of Gen. Pemberton. The battle
continued for nine hours, and the rebels were defeated with a loss of 3,000, as
admitted by the rebel General.
Supplies and reinforcements are reported to be entirely cut off from
Vicksburg.
