Vicky,

I found Ioka listed in both Keokuk County and Jefferson County as an
abandoned town. Ioka appears on a list of abandoned towns in Jackson township, Keokuk
Co., with a post office between 1858 and 1902. Ioka in Jefferson Co. was in
Polk township. The counties share a border in SE Iowa.

After enlisting, soldiers gathered in different camps around the state but
all eventually made their way to the Mississippi River town of Keokuk, Lee
County, in the far SE corner of the Iowa. The Mississippi River was the avenue for
shipping Iowa soldiers south. Today at a small area near the river,
overshadowed by the bridge spanning the river, is a small stone with a plaque stating
that from that spot many soldiers left for the South. There is also a small
cannon positioned there, facing south.

No reason for John Hux's discharge was listed in the Rosters. In Nov. 1863
the 33rd Iowa was in Arkansas and took part in an unsuccessful expedition
chasing CSA General Marmaduke from Pine Bluff to Rockport. This was the last
activity that the 33rd Iowa engaged in before the end of the year. If John Hux was
wounded in that action he might have been sent north, and then discharged in
Dec., but of course, there might also have been other reasons, such as
illness.

You might consider ordering his military service records or his pension
records from the National Archives, which might contain that information.

Good luck!

Sue
