Sue.. I couple of years ago I visited Andersonville and found the grave of my great-great grandfather George Washington Trussell. While I was there I was told that there was another Trussell there but all that they had was A.G. Trussell. He survived and was repatriated. I just looked at the link on the flags and saw his whole name (Albert G.) where he had captured one of the flags from Alabama. I really enjoy all of your postings. Please keep up the good work. The 21st Iowa Infantry Roster includes the following for James Garth:

Company C, 21st Iowa Infantry:

Garth, James. Age 22. Residence Key West, nativity England. Enlisted Aug. 16,
1862. Mustered Aug. 20, 1862. Killed in action May 22, 1863, Vicksburg,
Miss.

Key West, Iowa, was in Dubuque County, but apparently no longer maintained a
post office after Jan. 15, 1900, according to a publication of the Iowa Postal
History Study.

The following website includes a list of the flags or colors carried by Iowa
regiments during the war:

http://www2.legis.state.ia.us/Pubinfo/BattleFlag/flagb8.htm

Two of the flags carried by the 21st Iowa Infantry and presently in storage
in Des Moines are a National flag, and a regimental banner with the
inscriptions "Port Gibson, Champion Hills, Black River Bridge, Huntsville, Vicksburg, and
Jackson," all battles or siege that the regiment participated in.

You might also check the following website, which includes information on the
21st Iowa's flag in particular, and includes a photograph of the recently
stabilized flag (it had undergone repairs after being encased in coverings for
over 100 years, as had the other Iowa battle flags). It's a beautifully painted
flag:

Volume III of the Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of the
Rebellion, six volumes, includes the complete Roster and the Historical Sketch of
the 21st Iowa Infantry. The Historical Sketch is a fairly detailed accounting
of the activities of the regiment from the muster in date of June 4, 1862, to
the date the regiment officially mustered out, July 15, 1865. Included are
full or partial reports of the regiment's officers relative to movements or
participation in battles or engagements. This collection is also available on
CD-ROM. However, some libraries do carry the volumes. You might also check
online for something on the 21st Iowa.
