The Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers has him listed as "Wambacker":

Residence Johnson County, nativity Maryland. Enlisted Aug 16, 1862. Mustered Aug. 26, 1862. Mustered out, July 25, 1865, Savannah, Ga.

The on-line reprint of an 1880 Washington County history lists "J C Wombacher" as a farmer from Riverside (in Washington Co., just south of the Johnson Co. line). It notes he fought in all the major battles of the 22nd and "was never wounded." See http://usgennet/usa/topic/historical/LightOn/1880wash_65.htm.

Interestingly, he must have known my five ancestors in Co. G of the 22nd Iowa, who were also from the Riverside area (note that Riverside wasn't platted until after the war). They were Lingos and Marlings.

Do you have a photo of the headstone or any other information on him that you could send me? I am compiling a database of all the members of the 22nd.

My great great grandfather, Joseph C. Wombacher, has "CO F 22 IA INFT" marked on his tombstone. I managed to track that line to this website, but now I can not find his name anywhere within the history or rosters of that Infantry. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm trying to track down any photographs, military photographs, etc, and so I'm trying all avenues.
