Just a comment on the "bush hog" that might have caused the damage to the
stone.

Bush Hog is a brand name for large rotary mowers used to clear fields of
large weeds and brush. It is similar to a gasoline engine-powered push type
rotary lawn mower in that it has a rotating steel blade with a cutting edge at
the end. It differs from this mower in that it has a much larger blade,
typically in the 4 to 6 foot range, and is towed by and powered by a tractor, such
as an agricultural tractor.

Bush Hog brand rotary mowers have many imitators, and "bush hog" is often
used as a sort of generic name for this type of mower regardless of actual
brand name, similar to the way "Thermos" is often used for all vacuum bottles.

Unfortunately, if the gravestone was concealed in thick grass, weeds or
brush when the field
was being "bush hogged," it could very well have been damaged in the manner
described.
