I subscribe to a civil war database (civilwardata.com) that mentions a David Miller from OHIO who's about the right age. Are you sure he served in an Iowa unit? Since he was in Iowa in 1860, it does seem likely he would have served in an Iowa unit, but on the other hand, if he had kin -- perhaps a mother or father -- in Ohio, he might have gone there to visit first, and enlisted there.

Here's what I found in one civil war database:
David Miller
Residence was not listed; 45 years old.
Enlisted on 9/10/1862 as a Private.
On 9/10/1862 he mustered into OH 23rd Light Artillery
He was Mustered Out on 7/10/1865 at Louisville, KY

In the Ancestry.com pension index, I found nine David Millers who filed for pensions who all had wives named Sarah. None were identified as living in Iowa when they filed for a pension but then several places of filing weren't listed so they might have been.
What else do you know about "your" David from other census records? Children's names? Parents' names? Siblings?
