You can restrict your search to the Iowa books using the SEARCH SELECTOR in
the Left Pane. A search on "Tallman" yields a bunch of hits.

Richard M. J. Tallman shows up on page 1185 of Volume 2 with a short bio
including "nativity New York" . This Richard shows in Company C of the
16th Infantry. Good luck with your search.
