Subject: [IAALLAMA-L] 1850 census

In the past month there has been a tremendous increase in interest in the
county homepages. New people are joining the mail lists every day. While it
is preferable to use this forum for conversations, from time to time I will
have other pertinent announcements. And so it is today:
I have just volunteered to coordinate the transcription of the 1850 census
for Clayton and Allamakee counties (see below). We need volunteers to
transcribe the census from paper copies. Also proofreaders will be needed.
Volunteers will not need to have internet access. We can work by disk and
the US Postal Service. Perhaps you know someone who will be willing to join
the project.
Each transcriptionist will volunteer for a township. So volunteer early for
your favorite location. More information on the project can be found at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~iabenton/census/1860.htm If you have questions or
are ready to volunteer send me a message: mailto:
Also some great news for Allamakee County: Mrs. Dale Woodmansee has granted
us permission to put the entire cont3ents of her book Burial Grounds of
Allamakee County 1845-1988 on the homepage. I have an unbound version in
hand and will play around with scanning the text so it doesn't need to be
typed. More on this later.
This is a USGenWeb project.
