The following is the obit of Gottlieb Goettel. I am looking for his
father, mother and siblings and NOT having much luck! Any help would be
appreciated. His father's name is probably Gottlieb as well. His mother's
name may be Louisa. My guess is that they are buried in Allamakee County.
Can someone help me? Thanks in advance. Sheri Wheeler

Obituary of Gottlieb Goettel

Gottlieb Goettel Dies in Chicago:

Last Friday, the startling news came that Gottlieb Goettel, the well known
Lafayette township farmer, had died in Chicago that day. He had gone there
about two months ago for treatment for heart disease and rheumatism. He had
also visited La Crosse and Minneapolis and consulted skilled medical men
regarding his condition.

The remains arrived at Harper's Ferry on Saturday and funeral services were
conducted at the family home at Thompson's Corner on Tuesday, Rev. J. B.
Knoche, a former pastor of the German M. E. church here, officiating. Mr.
Goettel was but 47 years old. His remains were interred in the burying
ground near his home. The attendance at the funeral was very large, and was
made up of people from nearly every section of the county, deceased being
extensively acquainted throughout the county, and he was everywhere known as
an upright, honorable man. He leaves a large estate to his widow and eight
children, who in their great sorrow have the unfeigned sympathy of a large
circle of friends. Those who know him best are lavish in praise of his
character. He was a man of strict honor and integrity, ever ready to do
right and denounce wrong. He was a member of the little church near his
home and also superintendent of the Sunday school. There he was always to
be found on the Sabbath day. In the death of Mr. Goettel this community has
lost a most excellent citizen and the church one of its most zealous and
consistent members.

Summoned Home Suddenly

This community was greatly shocked Saturday to learn that Gottlieb Goettel,
one of the prominent farmers of Lafayette township, had died in Chicago the
day before and would be brought home on the train that day. It was
generally known that Mr. Goettel was in poor health and that he had gone to
Chicago some weeks ago in the hopes of being benefited by a course of
treatment there. But it seems that he grew rapidly worse instead of better
and was unable to be moved. His wife and other relatives were summoned and
were with him in his last hours. Rheumatism of the heart is given as the
cause of death. Deceased was just in the prime of life, being about 48
years of age, and it is to be regretted that he was not longer permitted to
enjoy the fruits of a well spent life. A widow and several grown sons and
daughters survive him and are left in good circumstances, as he possessed
one of the finest farms in the county. The funeral yesterday was largely
attended and testified to the high regard in which the deceased was held.
Services in the Evangelical Association church near by, of which he was
long, a leading and consistent member. Peace to the ashes of a good man and
may the reward of the just be his.
_______
His childrens' names were: Clara, Laura, Anetta, Minna, Esther, Amanda,
Aaron and Dan. Dan ran the farm after Gottlieb died. John Goettel ran the
farm after Dan died. John and Dorothy Goettel are still in Allamakee
County.
