My Norske relatives arrived in Canada and then entered the USA at Manitowoc,
WI in the spring of 1861. From there they headed to Winona co., MN to live
with a younger brother who proceeded them in 1851. The next spring my
gg-grandparents moved to Dane co., WI to live in a Norwegian settlement.
>From that settlement some moved on to the Decorah, IA area [NE Iowa],
Freeborn co., MN or to South Dakota. A daughter of my gg-grandparents moved
to Freeborn co. MN with her husband to settle among his kin. My
gg-grandparents and 8 children, some were married adults, moved to the
Hayward, Freeborn co., MN area [between Austin & Albert Lea, MN] soon
afterwards. About the time they arrived the daughter moved to SD settling
near Brookings, again with her husbands kin.

Some of my Freeborn county grand aunts and uncles moved to Minneapolis,
Duluth, Kansas, Sask., Canada, ND, etc. By the next couple of generations,
they were Americans and did as many Americans did, moved wherever they
pleased. Up to that time, they were very easy to locate.

If you want to write directly to me, giving me dates [as far as known,] I
will try to help using the 1880 census. The Norwegian government tried to
keep track of their emigrants. You may never know for sure where they
entered the country, records are fragmented at some ports, but you may be
able to locate where they settled. One problem I have had is the changing
of family surnames. Some kept Esse, others adopted Larson, the Gjerde line
mostly became the Jerdee line, the Njos family became Lindborgs and
Olsons.....in searching for info about my g-grandma Kari Njos, I found 2
other ladies with that name born within a 10 year range. So far we have
been unable to connect any of them.

Sorry about rambling, a habit acquired thru 30+ years of family searches.
So many ancestors, so little time.
