Kathy & listers,
Ok, Since the question was addressed to me, I'll try to take a stab at the
answer. The way I see it is that we have the "old" way (and boy did the
merge mess THAT up!) and our "new" way (still in transition but getting
easier).
Old way: Previously, all posts to the Allamakee Co. boards (obit, query,
etc) were also automatically sent as an e-mail to this list. I think it was
called "gateway" or something like that. It was a feature that not all
lists used, but a very useful one.
New way: The "new" Rootsweb/Ancestry message boards don't have this
"gateway" automatic posting to the pertinent list. So......when you make a
post to the new boards, that is the only place they will be. They will not
come via the list, nor will they be at the Allamakee Co. web-site.
Researchers have to sign in, search, and hope to find the obit, or whatever
they are looking for.
Old way: The wonderful boards on our web-site. Easily searched or browsed.
Obits in one place, queries in another......neat, clean and user friendly.
New way: The all-encompassing boards at Rootsweb/Ancestry. A search that
looks the world-over for "John R. Smith" and gives you exactly 1000 hits
from everyplace except Allamakee Co. Iowa....which is probably "hit #1001"
, if you could get it. I'm being a bit nasty here, but you get my point.
New way on the Allamakee Co. web-site: Completely in transition. Anything
previously submitted via the genconnect boards is gone over to
Rootsweb/Ancestry. Each individual can choose to re-submit --either via
this list or to Suzann at her e-mail address. Either way, she will post to
the Allamakee Co. web-site.
My suggestion was only that the info. be sent to the list, so we can see the
info. immediately and wouldn't have to go to the web-site and browse to see
what's new. The info. must be manually posted by Suzann now because the
automatic system has been taken away from us. There is no way that she can
post queries, obits, etc. for immediate viewing as in the "old way". I'm
also certain Suzann will install a "search this site" when she has time.
Clicking on many of the catagories on the web-site won't work any longer.
To search the old Allamakee Co. posts you need to go to Rootsweb/Ancestry
and do it from there. I don't know if they are going to improve things, but
I don't hold out much hope.
To make a very long story end......lets gather together and give Suzann all
our support. She took over a web-site near and dear to our hearts at a bad
time (the merger) and will need time to make all the changes we are looking
for. She's trying to rebuild a house that someone dismantled. The kitchen
went to China, the bathroom to Virginia, the bedroom to
Argentina.......<nite all>

So what you're suggesting, Sharyl, is that we post pertinent "obit, will,
marriage, birth, etc. submissions" to the site and to the list?
If so, what if we have already done so? I posted several obits in April,
and perhaps other times. It seems that although I didn't submit them to the
list, they appeared anyway. So should I still do this again?
Can anyone tell me whether the current state of retrieving information on
the Web site is temporary or permanent? And if it is permanent, how do we
retrieve information? I don't understand why Rootsweb isn't sending out
messages explaining their changes. When I click on a category on the Web
site, I go to an unfamiliar page that I just cannot seem to navigate. Has
anybody had any luck?
Any information they can share?
Kathy

>> I suggest that we make obit, will, marriage, birth, etc. submissions
publically via this list. My reason being that this info. is then available
immediately to listers & also available for future searching & browsing on
the web-site in "our Allamakee library". This may also be an alternative to
posting on the Rootsweb boards -- because that way they are "owned" and
submitted to the county, but still in the Rootsweb list archives. (am I
making sense?)
