Subject: [IAALLAMA-L] 1860 census

I started searching the 1860 census today on the pay-for-use Ancestry.com
and found that they don't have it broken down by townships. I groaned when
I saw there were 311 images & me with no index (the AIS index isn't really
great). Anyway, I skipped through the images and came up with a very rough
guide. I thought maybe it would be of help to someone else trying to get
through all 311 images. Remember this is very rough, and unless I just
happened to hit on the start or end of a township you will have to search
before & after the image that I indicate. (I hope this makes sense)
Iowa twp.- starts with image #1
Lansing twp. - image #20; image #30 -still Lansing twp.
Lafayette twp. - image #40; image #50 - still Lafayette twp.
Center twp. - image #60; image #70 - still Center twp.
French Creek twp. - image #80
Union City twp.- image #90
Waterloo twp. - image #100
Makee twp. - image #120; image #140 - still Makee twp.
Union Prairie twp. - image #160
Ludlow twp. - image #180
Jefferson twp. - image #200
Paint Creek twp. - image #220; image #228 - ends Paint Creek
Taylor twp. - image #228 starts Taylor; image #245 - still Taylor
Fairview twp. - image #250
Linton twp. - image #260; image #270 - still Linton twp
Franklin twp. - image #280; image #290 - still Franklin twp.
Post twp. - image #300; Post ends on #311.
Hanover twp. - buried, didn't find.
BTW -- I looked at the census transcriptions that are already on the
Allamakee Co. web-site --- several wonderful volunteers are working on 1860
and other years and there are lots of blanks for volunteers to transcribe &
proof-read. Remember these records are only on-line and FREE to use because
of these volunteers. Do you have an hour a day or in a week or a couple
hours a month? If you like to do your research on-line. Please volunteer!
