Pat,
I've heard or read about living in the caves before. There are thousands
of caves through-out Allamakee (and even more sink-holes). The earliest
peoples (long before our pioneer ancestors)wintered in caves; so there is
likely a lot of truth in your old family story. I believe it was Darius Orr
of Allamakee Co. who was an amatur geologist & archeologist in the late
1800's in Allamakee. His papers have been preserved and can be viewed on
microfilm at any FHL. You might find some clues in his writings. You may
also get more information from the following:

Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources:
http://www.state.ia.us/dnr/index.htm
web-site has an address & ph#.
or:
James Janett, Director Allamakee Conservation
Address:
R.R. 3, Box 40-A
Waukon, IA 52172
Phone: 563/568-2137
(I'm not sure if this is current - maybe Ada Marie can check the local
phone book & verify)

I have a photo of an Allamakee cave on my web-site, thanks to a fellow
researcher:

Keep us posted!
