Yes, Steven
There is/was coal in Boone County. My great grandfather, a Swedish immigrant named Mathias Rundquist, was a coal miner in Moingona in Boone County in the 1870's and 80's. I stopped by there a few years back to explore but was told the mines are all closed down and covered over. My understanding is that the coal in Iowa was a soft type which doesn't burn as hot, and other coal
sites in the country produced a more desireable type. A book about this topic (coal mining in Iowa) was just recently mentioned on a Scottish list I subscribe to. Here is what they say about the book:
A good book on this is "Black Diamonds" by Dorothy Schwieder
ISBN 0-8138-0991-6, this book a good read for anyone who had family mining in the US in the late 19th and early 20th century. The book covers the union fights and other problems miners had.
That said, I guess I should introduce myself. I am researching RUNDQUIST and HOLM in Boone County (Moingona in particular) in the 1870's to 1900 and their descendants with the surnames CARLSON, ELSTON and ANDERSON in the city of Boone.
Regards,
Jeanne Nelson
