I have discovered what happened to this family since posting the above message. They moved, first briefly to MN, then to Taylor Co. WI, where the father, Julius, was injured in a logging accident, had his leg amputated, and died. The mother was sent to an asylum and the 8 children were "farmed out" to whoever would take them, all separately. Hence the silence from the children when they became adults on what their background was. We still do not know where Julius and Paulina came from in Germany and have never found their immigration record although we know they immigrated in about 1873-4. Julius had been an uhlan in the Saxon army.
