I translated the following biography from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. Information in brackets and notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

Joseph Roethe

The Anniversary Edition contains an accurate picture of this man and his honored wife, as well as the beautiful residence of this respected family. Mr. Roethe was born on 18 December 1858 in Delaware County, Iowa. He received his education there, and after successfully completing school, he took up farming and worked on his parents’ farm until the spring of 1879. He then went to Kniest Township, Carroll County, where he worked on the large farm of Mr. Henry Baumhover. In the fall of that same year, he acquired 160 acres of land in Washington Township, which he moved onto and then operated. On 21 November 1882, he married Miss Maria Drees, an estimable young lady. After the family had operated the farm successfully for 13 years, in 1895 they moved to Arcadia, where they purchased 40 acres of land on the outskirts of the town, on which they built a large, fine house, and where Mr. Roethe and his wife and children have lived since then. They enjoy a large circle !
of acquaintances and are respected by all who know them. Johann, Anton, and Maria are the fine children of this worthy married couple.
