Kelly, I think we may have a connection since we have the same name (Johann Gerhard GERDES) and the fact that the family was Baptist in Burlington, IA. Do you think you could find out from the Oak Street Baptist Church if there is any early connection with it to the Baptist Church in Felde which was established in Felde, Germany (in the Oldenburg area) in the early 1850's? Some of the members of that church left Germany and started a new Baptist congregation in Burlington, IA. They apparently modelled the actual building after the building in Felde, Germany. I have several pictures of this church both from the 1800's and how it looks today. It has been well kept! Please let me know if the Oak Street Baptist Church is the one the Felde immigrants helped to build. If they aren't, I wonder if they might know which Baptist church in Burlington it might be. The reason I know about the Burlington church is that it was mentioned in a 150th anniversary booklet published by t!
he Baptist Church in Felde. I have a cousin who has helped to translate portions of this book from German to English. It is fascinating! I think the Baptist church in Felde has records on its early members that might be helpful if indeed your Johann Gerhard GERDES is a cousin of our Gerd Gerdes from that original church.
